The size of the March Madness Tournament was historic.
93 players! 44 playing in their first event.
And a bit of History by James Stripes, TD
The last Spokane area youth event that was larger was Winterfest 2009 with 107. 2008-2009 was an important year for Spokane youth chess as  Spokane hosted the state elementary in April 2009, which had over 1,000 players including the I Love 2 sections with the championship sections. The second largest local tournament in 2009 was the St. Valentine's Massacre at Saint George's with 86. Pilgrim's Progress inNovember 2008 had 95, also at SGS. The top youth players in Spokane in 2008-2009 were Ryan Ackerman and Michael Cambareri, now both are the top players in the Spokane Chess Club.
Mead HS was dominant in team competition. Saint George's usually finished first in Elementary teams, with Arcadia, Jefferson of Pullman, and Lake Spokane Elementary often battling for second. Homelink Deer Park and Northwood made strong showings in Middle School.
Since 2009, the largest events have topped 70 and sometimes reached the low 80s. 50-60 has been typical with many events having less than 40 and some in the 20s.

The GROUNDHOG STORY by Coach James Stripes, TD
Saint George's School hosted the Groundhog Gambit on Saturday, February 11. The 46 participants included several regulars, a dozen playing in their first event, and a large contingent from the host school. In addition, nine parents opted to participate in the three round parent's event.

Trophies were awarded to Eshan Reddy (4.5) and Hasan Al-Hakeem (4.5), who drew their fourth round game in the top section and beat their other opponents. Eshan has stronger tie-breaks--his opponents scoring one more than Hasan's--and so took home the first place trophy, leaving second for Hasan. Amelie Hilton won the biggest upset in that section. The last two rounds of the top section ended with time scrambles on several boards. In one tragicomedy, Ben Patterson saw that his knight could fork king and queen after he let a pawn promote. Alas, the pawn promoted with check and the knight could not legally move. In another round, however, he checkmated his opponent with only five seconds remaining.

Competition was tight in Middle School where all participants, except a new player, were rated within a 300 point range in rating. Karl Keener (4.5) won first; Indiana Elkins (3.5), who lost to Karl in the first round, finished second. Leo Sherwood won the biggest upset. Eleven Saint George's students made up the bulk of the players in Elementary. Owen Sherwood (4.5) won first; Melody Ji (4.0), who lost to Owen in round three finished second. Yanek Zhan was the only player with three points after three rounds, but then faced Owen and Melody in the last two rounds and fell to fourth place. He took home the prize for biggest upset.

Saint George's dominated in the Elementary team competition. A new group of affiliated home school students calling themselves Addy Classical Conversations won the team trophy for HS/MS, edging out by a point Paideia HS, which won the team trophy at Winterfest. The combined scores of Archer Wang and Kelby Wang again won the prize for top parent/child team. Kelby also teamed up with his sister Kelin Bai to win the puzzle contest that consisted of six endgame exercises from Sergey Ivashchenko, The Manual of Chess Combinations (1997), and won a chess endgame book.

Kings Klash Tournament Results
Played Nov. 19, Saturday

Youth Chess Growing Fast ~ by James Stripes
~ Young students experiencing their first chess tournament made up more than half of the 51 participants in the King's Klash event held at St. John Vianney School on Saturday, November 19. Even with 28 players new, enough of them elected to record their games that we ran short of pencils. Fortunately, one of the directors keeps an extra stash in his bag.
~ There were games that ended in fewer than ten moves and others that dragged on until neither player had sufficient material to checkmate. There were draws because a player with overwhelming force trapped a king that was not in check. There were draws because some of the young players do not yet know how to execute elementary checkmates. There were checkmates aplenty. Good sportsmanship was the norm with students who lost giving credit to their opponents for playing well. Students who recorded their games gained insights into their play from one of Spokane's most experienced players, Robert "Obie" O'Bannon, who recently joined Inland Chess Academy as a coach, and from Coach Jack Johnson, a recent high school champion.
~ Awards went to Braeden Marver (4.5) who won the high school section over Kolby Uhlenkott (4.0) and Mir Park (4.0). The second place trophy went to Kolby on tiebreaks over Mir. The upset prize in high school went to Olivia Hilton. In middle school, Karl Keener (4.5) finished in first. Second place went to Noah Hochheimer. Jake Malde won the upset prize. Johnny McGivern won the elementary section with the day's only perfect 5.0. Two players finished a point behind--Solomon Moss and Toby Lawson. Solomon won the trophy on tiebreaks. The upset prize went to Luca Hochheimer.
~ Pullman High School won the HS team trophy, edging Cheney HS by half a point.
~ Saint George's School was the top elementary team, one point ahead of Hope Lutheran.
~ The Keener family won a chess set for finishing at the top of the parent-child competition, half a point ahead of the Price family

Tournament Story, by James Stripes
~~ Although the Pilgrim's Progress youth tournament was small, it showed evidence that youth chess is growing in Spokane. One-third of the participants were playing in their first or second tournament. Strength at the top was evident in fierce competition among those contending for first place. The twenty-one players were kept in one section but prizes were distributed as Open and Under 700/unrated.
More than half of the participants were grade 7 or higher.

~~ There was a four-way tie for first with 4.0. First place on tie-breaks went to Ben Patterson, who tied for first in Spokane Chess Club'sEastern Washington Open in September. Second place went to Indiana Elkins, third to Eshan Reddy, and fourth to Karl Keener. Ben's only loss was in round four to Eshan who managed to promote a pawn with checkmate after stubborn defence when both players had less than 20 seconds remaining. Indiana and Karl both lost to Ben. Eshan's loss came in round three to Sebastian Campbell, who then lost to Karl and Indiana in the last two rounds. Sebastian beat Indiana two weeks ago at the Queen's Gambit tournament. Sebastian took the upset prize for his round three win.

~ ~~
~~ It will remain to be seen whether any youth player can rise to the top of what looks like a very balanced group. It is difficut for elementary students to qualify for state playing in such a group. Noah Hochheimer and Kelin Bai managed to do so with 3.0 each, the minimum needed to qualify. Both showed their skill. Kelin checkmated one opponent with only 4 seconds remaining on her clock. In one of his games, Noah sacrificed his queen, deflected defender from a back rank and then checkmated with a rook.

~~ First place in the lower section went to Aiden Boyd, playing in his first tournament. Rachel Price, also new, took second. Both had 3.0. Third place in that section went to Asmi Jain (2.5), playing in her second full event. She had played two games in one event last year after a basketball game. Best unrated trophy went to Amanda Price, playing her first event. Upset prize went to Annabelle Jordan.

~~ Saint George's, the host school, won the team trophy. Students earned raffle tickets by annotating their games and bringing them to the analysis table. Raffle prizes included some chess books, including Forcing Checkmate by the tournament director. There were other chess materials raffled. The grand prize was four tickets to The Nutcracker, donated by Idaho Central Credit Union.
